1. Incentive Newsletter Sign Up
I believe this is probably the most popular of the three. I can say that I, myself, have gotten caught up in the incentives just by providing an email address. Unfortunately, I receive a lot of newsletters that I wish I did not now. But I deal with them because I know it was my fault for signing up. Over 50% of people do the same:
- 67% sign up to receive discounts and promotions
- 55% to get a “freebie” in exchange for their email address
- 50% to get updates on the upcoming sales
It is an amazing way to capture emails; even though we know we will receive tons of emails. We as humans love to get discounts and free items if we can. There is a tool called Optyn that can help with this process we all go through. Even if we know what we are signing up for we would like to easily opt out of it like we opted in. With Optyn you can keep track of everything you are subscribed to and if you choose that you are no longer interested in a subscription, they make it easy to opt out. It is an excellent extension to have on your email. It eliminates the daily ritual of emptying out the spam folder.
2. Scroll Triggered Boxes & “While Waiting” Boxes
This is the pop-up like box that appears when you scroll down some on a webpage. The human eyes react to movement so they get noticed pretty easily. When the box pops up people have already scrolled down the page long enough to have gotten some value or knowledgeable information so they choose to explore further into what this offer is. The “While Waiting” boxes I refer to are the ones that ask for your email while you are doing absolutely nothing but waiting for a site to load while offering a great deal. These two tactics are similar and a lot of the time effective. Most of the time people are so bored that they put in their email just for the heck of it.
3. Social Sites (Facebook, Twitter)
Your personalized network is just as important as your work Rolodex. If you have a fan base then you should already know that this is a great way to capture emails. Simply add a form on your Facebook page so that when customers visit they can easily subscribe this way. Also take advantage of Twitter as well. Not many people think of twitter as a place to do social networking as much as they do Facebook. Twitter has the same advantages as Facebook, Twitter may be a little bit better because you don’t get all the clutter of super long posts and pictures taking up space. It is a simple tweet people can read in a few seconds and decide if they’re interested.
